Information Systems

Most organizations in the world rely on some type of information system to compete and operate in a globalized environment. The rapid change in technology created multiple digital devices and software applications which organizations use to increase productivity. To understand how information systems support the business process in an organization, let's understand first what information systems are. Information systems deal with the development and management of information technology tools to help people perform all the tasks related to information processing and management. So what is a business process? Business process is a collection of related, structured activities or tasks that produce a specific service or product for a particular customer or customers. For example, organizations have many departments that process a certain task, such as human resources, marketing, and management. Information systems support these departments to better perform and meet customer expectations.

Organizations usually have an information technology department that manages information systems. Many companies exist that develop tools to help with a business process. It can be developed in-house by the company or the company can seek out an outside vendor. For example, if a company wants to create a better communication environment and improve business process for their employees, Microsoft SharePoint is software that can provide this service. Massive amounts of applications exist that support departments within an organization for a specific need. Marketing departments usually use application software like Microsoft's PowerPoint for presentations which allows users to create and edit graphical rich information to appear on electronic slides. Adobe Photoshop can be used by a marketing department to create and display charts, graphs, and drawings. Microsoft FrontPage would help a marketing department to design a company website and publish on the web. Marketing applications help organizations with product, promotion, placement, and price. Microsoft Access is great for management to store, retrieve, and manipulate data. Microsoft Outlook and IBM Lotus Notes can help management create and maintain calendars, appointments, to-do lists, and business contacts. Technology changes constantly which therefore causes companies to update their systems and equipment. In order to compete and increase production, companies are always looking for new technology.
